Book Review— Odd Interlude: A Special Odd Thomas Adventure

by Dean Koontz

The Odd Thomas series by Dean Koontz features a twenty something fry cook who is gifted with special powers and abilities. He’s one of my favorite Dean Koontz characters and Koontz is one of my favorite suspense/thriller authors.

This is one of the shorter books in the Odd Thomas series so I decided to read it before picking up my hardbound copy of Deeply Odd on my nightstand.

I’d read some of the negative reviews about the book so had my guard up while reading. I couldn’t disagree more with the negative reviews. Having read nearly every Dean Koontz book and all prior Odd Thomas books I found several features that I enjoyed. For new readers to the series, it offers a short recap of the original Odd Thomas book then moves on to place Odd in a small dysfunctional community. We learn of a family who is terrorized by a powerful villain who will give Odd one of his biggest challenges yet.

Readers will find a good blend of the mad scientist theme frequently used by Koontz, events related to a black ops government research facility and a terrifying antagonist.

This is a great read and I highly recommend it!

  1. Dean Koontz is my favorite author. And I absolutely love this series. Odd is a fantastic character. I agree with you, Rich – this was well worth the read. I’m reading his most recent one now. :-)

  2. Thank you, Rhonda! We pretty much see eye-to-eye on Dean Koontz and the Odd Thomas series. I expect to finish reading, Deeply Odd tonight and WOW!
Mr Koontz has me by the throat, lol ;)

  3. I love Dean Koontz. He’s one of my greatest inspirations. The thing I love most is how he can be absolutely chilling, but always has a happy ending. :-) I haven’t really gotten into the Odd series as of yet. I read the first one, and while I found Odd to be awesome, I didn’t think the antagonist was that great. I plan to read the rest of them after I read the Frankenstein series. :-)

  4. Thanks for sharing your admiration for Dean Koontz. I’m blown away by his imagination. Last night I finished his latest book in the series, Deeply Odd and all I can say is, Wow! I share more in my forthcoming review.

  5. I have to confess, I’ve never read a Dean Koontz novel. Your review is intriguing, and your passion for the writer’s stories evident. I may have to give him a try…

    • Hi T. James! Many bookstores in the U.S. sell Dean Koontz boons on their Horror shelves. He has written many horror stories but more of his books are suspense/thrillers. I think I can safely say, all his books contain a lot of suspense and many move at the pace of a thriller. He does use common themes which I’ve alluded to in this interview. Hope you give him a try.
